How to Choose the Right Stair Treads
1. Measure Your Stairs
Measure the width, depth, and number of steps. Standard stair treads are designed for steps 36" to 48" wide. Don't forget to measure the nosing — the front edge that overhangs the riser.
2. Match Your Flooring
For the best look, choose stair treads from the same collection as your floor. At Dotfloor, our SuperOak and New Parliament lines offer matching stair tread options.
3. Consider Traffic Level
For high-traffic stairs (main staircase, commercial), choose treads with a thicker wear layer (20mil+). For secondary stairs or basements, standard wear layers work great.
Installation Guide: Step by Step
What You'll Need
- SPC stair treads and matching nosing pieces
- Construction adhesive (we recommend Loctite PL Premium)
- Measuring tape and pencil
- Utility knife or miter saw
- Level
- Clean cloth
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Remove any old carpet, staples, or adhesive residue. The stair surface should be clean, dry, and level. Sand down any high spots and fill low spots with self-leveling compound.
Step 2: Dry Fit First
Place each tread on its step without adhesive to check the fit. Mark any cuts needed. Start from the top step and work your way down — this way you won't have to step on freshly glued treads.
Step 3: Apply Adhesive
Apply construction adhesive in a zigzag pattern on the back of the tread. Press firmly onto the step, ensuring full contact especially at the nosing edge.
Step 4: Install the Nosing
The bullnose (nosing) piece covers the front edge of each step. Apply adhesive and press into place. Some nosing pieces click into the tread, while others are glued separately.
Step 5: Install Risers
Cut SPC planks to fit the riser (vertical face) of each step. Apply adhesive and press into place. This creates a fully finished look.
Step 6: Allow to Cure
Keep weight off the stairs for 24 hours while the adhesive cures. After that, your new staircase is ready for traffic!
