Before You Begin: What You Need

Installing SPC vinyl plank flooring is one of the easiest home improvement projects you can tackle. With click-lock technology, no glue or nails are required. Most homeowners can complete a standard room in 4-6 hours.
Tools Required
- Tape measure
- Utility knife or vinyl cutter
- Rubber mallet
- Spacers (typically 1/4 inch)
- Pull bar for last rows
- Pencil and straight edge
- Safety glasses
Materials
- SPC vinyl planks (order 10% extra for cuts and waste)
- Transition strips (if connecting to other flooring)
- Underlayment (if not pre-attached to your planks)
Step 1: Prepare Your Subfloor
A proper subfloor is critical for a successful installation. SPC flooring can be installed over most existing floors including concrete, plywood, existing vinyl, and tile.
- Clean thoroughly — Remove all debris, dust, and adhesive residue
- Level the surface — Fill any low spots and sand down high points. The subfloor should be flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet
- Check for moisture — For concrete subfloors, perform a moisture test. SPC handles moisture well, but excessive moisture underneath can cause issues
- Remove baseboards — Carefully remove baseboards for reinstallation after the floor is laid
Step 2: Acclimate Your Flooring
Bring your SPC planks into the installation room 48 hours before installation. While SPC is less sensitive to temperature changes than hardwood, acclimation ensures the best results. Keep room temperature between 65-85 degrees F.
Step 3: Plan Your Layout
- Measure the room width and divide by the plank width to determine how many rows you will need
- If the last row would be less than 1/3 of a plank width, trim the first row to balance both sides
- Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches between adjacent rows for a natural appearance
- Start from the longest, straightest wall
Step 4: Install the First Row
- Place spacers along the starting wall (1/4 inch expansion gap)
- Lay the first plank with the tongue side facing the wall
- Connect the next plank by angling the short end into the previous plank and clicking down
- Cut the last plank in the row to fit, leaving a 1/4 inch gap at the wall
- Use the leftover piece (if at least 8 inches) to start the next row
Step 5: Continue Row by Row
- Angle the long side of the new plank into the previous row at about 20 degrees
- Press down firmly until the plank clicks into place
- Use a rubber mallet and tapping block to ensure tight seams
- Continue across the room, maintaining staggered joints
Step 6: Install the Final Row
Measure the remaining space, subtract 1/4 inch for the expansion gap, and cut the planks to width. Use a pull bar to click the last row into place against the wall.
Step 7: Finishing Touches
- Remove all spacers
- Reinstall baseboards (nail into the wall, not the floor)
- Install transition strips at doorways and where the new floor meets other flooring
- Allow 24 hours before placing heavy furniture
Pro Tips for a Professional Finish
- Mix planks from multiple boxes to ensure natural color variation
- Never force planks together — if they do not click easily, check for debris in the locking mechanism
- Undercut door frames so planks slide underneath for a clean look
- Use a sharp blade when cutting — change utility knife blades frequently for clean cuts
