Why Vinyl Plank Works in Basements
Rigid core vinyl plank is the default basement recommendation for three reasons:
- It is genuinely waterproof. An SPC core is stone plastic composite — it does not swell, warp or delaminate when wet. Laminate and engineered wood both fail this test.
- It is dimensionally stable. Basements swing in temperature and humidity more than the rest of the house. A rigid core moves far less than WPC or flexible LVT.
- It installs over concrete. As a floating floor, it does not need to bond to the slab — which matters, because bonding to a slab that releases vapour is how adhesive floors fail.
What it does not do is fix a wet basement. If water actively enters your basement, no flooring solves that. Fix the water first.

Test Your Slab Before You Buy Anything
This is the step that decides whether the project succeeds, and it costs almost nothing.
The plastic sheet test
- Tape a 2' x 2' square of clear plastic sheeting tightly to the concrete on all four edges
- Leave it 24 to 72 hours
- Lift it and look
Condensation under the plastic, or a dark patch on the concrete, means the slab is releasing moisture. That is not a reason to abandon the project — it is a reason to add a vapour barrier and address drainage before you install.
For a more precise reading, a calcium chloride test or an in-slab relative humidity probe gives you actual numbers, which some manufacturer warranties require.
Moisture Barriers: Usually Required
Even with attached IXPE backing, most manufacturers require a separate vapour barrier over concrete below grade. IXPE handles sound and cushioning; it is not a slab moisture management system.
Typically that means 6-mil polyethylene sheeting, seams overlapped and taped, run a few inches up the wall and trimmed after the floor is in.

Preparing a Basement Slab
- Fix water intrusion first. Grading, gutters, downspout extensions, and interior drainage if needed. Flooring is the last step, not the fix.
- Check flatness. Basement slabs are frequently out of level. You need flat within roughly 3/16" over 10 feet — use self-levelling compound on low spots and grind high ones.
- Clean thoroughly. Remove old adhesive, paint flakes and dust.
- Seal cracks. Fill significant cracks with a concrete patch before laying anything.
- Acclimate the flooring. Leave boxes flat in the basement for 48 hours. Basement temperature differs from the rest of the house, and installing cold planks causes gapping later.
Cold Floors and Comfort
Concrete stays cold. Vinyl plank over bare slab will feel cooler than the same floor upstairs — that is physics, not a product defect.
What helps:
- Attached IXPE backing provides a modest thermal break
- Insulating underlayment rated for below-grade use, where the product allows it
- Area rugs in seating zones
- Electric radiant mats under the floor, if your plank is rated for radiant heat — check the maximum temperature spec, usually around 85°F
What Not to Use in a Basement
- Laminate — a fibreboard core swells permanently with any water contact
- Solid or engineered hardwood — moves with humidity, not rated below grade
- Carpet — holds moisture, grows mould in damp conditions
- Glue-down over an untested slab — vapour pressure lifts the adhesive bond
- Anything installed before the water problem is solved
